Williams wins a thriller

Williams wins a thriller

AAP Sunday 11 January 2009

Top seed Serena Williams has won an epic three-set battle against Sam Stosur in the first round of the Medibank International Sydney today.

After world No.1 Williams claimed the opening set 6-3, the Queenslander was broken twice in the second set but broke back both times to claim the set in a tiebreak 7-6(4).

Williams saved four match points on Stosur’s serve and recovered from a break down to win three consecutive games to seal the third set 7-5.

The American narrowly avoided becoming the first top seed to lose in the first round in Sydney since Jennifer Capriati in 2003.

So close Sam. Im diassapointed but you played really well and pushed her. Youll get it next time. And the positive is that at least you pushed a top player. Good luck in the Australian Open. You can do it!

Heartbreaking loss, but here’s to hoping Sam can take some good out of it and be extra motivated by the fact she was able to keep it up with one who is arguably the top player in activity today.

Better luck in doubles and at the Open. We’re proud of you today, Sam.

I really really really want to cry that was so close. I really hope that this match can help her improve mentally and do really well where it really matters in the Aus Open.

i cant believe you didn’t beat serena!!! at 40 love when you did a double fault you should of challanged the ball was way in and when it was your ad. you should of done a lob. anyway very very good try and don’t let this get to you when you go to melbourne i think you could go far. anyway you played really well cya

    Great game! Well done!

Also, you look great. I would love it if you could post something on your website about your gym workout.

4 match points!!!! Arrrg, Sammy you only need a little more confidence in yourself!!! Just a little! Man I hate when the players I like have even match point or serve for winning the match and they loose! That’s because I’m no longer fan of Jelena Dokic hahaha

  • Jimmy

Well good luck in the doubles!

Bad luck Sammy!! But you played SO WELL against Serena!! It was an awesome match to watch :) I agree, there were a few calls that you probably shoulda challenged when you were serving for the match, but I don’t think you should be dissapointed at all. This match clearly shows that you can match it with the top players and have the goods to make it into at least the top 20 this yr!! I wish you all the best in Melbourne next week!!! I’m sure you will do really well :p

Unlucky Sam. So close but good to see you up there with the best! Keep building! Good luck in the doubles with Rennae – should be a good pairing!!!

A great effort and one deserving of a top 10 player.

I think you have the game to take you to the top provided you take a little more time between points and give yourself a chance to volley more often; no other woman player on the singles circuit can volley. Period. So with one of the best serves in the business, a lethal forhand, a great single handed backhand which gives you added reach, better than most court coverage, a superior level of fitness, a terrific demeanor and no grunts or other strange offputting noises as you play adds up to a great player on the rise. Now all you have to do is believe in yourself and your undoubted ability.

    Good luck in Melbourne…..

Gee! What a match! I watched the whole thing on my couch! I was SO nervous in the second and third sets, it was like I was the one playing! I thought you played AWESOME tennis and that you deserved to win the match. Serena didn’t show very good sportsmanship, I thought, she had stopped TRYING which I think is the worst thing you can do in sport. You got a very LUCKY call though, the let one! But then again, you totally deserved it! I also reckon you should have challenged some calls during your match points (like veryone else has said) but most important of all is that you enjoyed the match and that you showed great sportsmanship! You ARE the true winner-you showed BRILLIANT and TRUE AUSSIE sportsmanship!

    Great effort Sam!

Always tough to go down when you’ve held a number of match points . . . but at the same time, it could also have been a straight set loss. You showed great heart and character by pushing it all the way to the limit.

Many positives to take forward from this one.

Well done Sammy, we’re very proud of you! Good luck in the Doubles!

[Also heard there's a rowdy group of Brits, Swedes and Norwegians headed down your way, so be careful . . . never know what they might be up to! LOL (Actually I think they're relatively harmless).]
