Stosur draws Lisicki at Eastbourne
14 Jun 2009
Samantha Stosur takes on Sabine Lisicki of Germany in the opening round of the AEGON International tennis tournament on Monday.
Australia's French Open semifinalist and world No.18 enters the first round of the traditional Wimbledon warm-up in Eastbourne with three wins from her three matches against Lisicki, ranked No.44.
Stosur knocked Lisicki out of this year's Australian Open in the second round and won their first-round encounter on the grass of Birmingham in the 2008 build-up to Wimbledon.
The Australian opted out of last week's tournament in Birmingham to enjoy a few days off after her feats at Roland Garros and then took to the practice court to begin her transition from clay to grass.
But rain over the past week in London forced her onto fast hard courts for some of her training sessions.
"It's always hard coming straight from the French playing a tournament straight up, let alone finishing pretty late in Paris," Stosur said.
"So in the end I think it was definitely better for me to have a bit of time off and being able to practice before coming here rather than rushing to the grass and in two days' time playing more matches."
A third-round clash with Russian No.4 seed Vera Zvonareva, ranked seventh in the world, or Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo looms if Stosur makes it past a likely encounter with Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki, seeded sixth, in the second round. Tags: eastbourne
