Sam’s Wimbledon blog part one
24 Jun 2009
Well Wimbledon time and it is a very exciting time for me after all the fun of the French Open.
After making the doubles final at Eastbourne on Saturday, I came down to Wimbledon and actually had a day off on Sunday, just relaxing and not doing much.
I arrived on-site today and the place is abuzz. Everyone is in high spirits. The entire tennis world converges on Wimbledon. There is something very special about it. Of course I have to keep my focus on my tennis.
I really want to keep playing well and not let anything distract me. That's what I managed to do at the French. I developed a routine that allowed me to really focus on what I needed to do on court.
It's funny how superstitious you can get. I got to the point of making sure my outfit and hair were the same everyday, but I think I am going to let go of that one for Wimbledon, it just got too stressful having to continue that on. I just can't go every night again having to worry about straightening my hair!
No, this time I am going to keep the superstitions to a minimum so I don't get too uptight if something goes wrong.
So as I write this we are less than 24 hours out from my first round match against Bethanie Mattek-Sands. We haven't played each other for about five years but we know a little bit about each other's game. She is a good player, quite aggressive, plays fast and hits the ball a bit flat. I am looking forward to it. My coach Dave Taylor and I will work on a game plan, but my main aim will be to bring my best game and really concentrate on that.
In fact Dave and I are about to go to the practice courts now for about an hour. After that it is into the rooms for a little bit of treatment, just to make sure the body is all in working order, it shouldn’t take long as I am feeling pretty good.
Then it is home and I will cook some dinner and have a relaxing early night. A pretty routine preparation. Who knows, maybe me cooking dinner every night will be my superstition for Wimbledon 2009!
Check in again soon. Seeya,
Sam
