Postcard from Doha

Postcard from Doha

31 Oct 2009

I'm writing to you from Doha at the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships. I arrived here on Tuesday afternoon. I took it easy once I arrived after the 24-hour journey from Brisbane. The hotel is amazing and we are all getting looked after very well, my room is probably bigger then my apartment and definitely bigger then where I was staying last week with the clothes dryer in my room haha, I have had a beautiful bunch of roses delivered to the room the first day I got here and we have received some gifts each day too. Some of the perks at being at the Champs i guess. I'm not too sure the hotel is too environmentally focused though. There are 45 lights in my room!!! There are 15 in the chandelier and the rest are lamps and down lights... crazy!  I have learned what the traditional dress is of Qatar and it varies from the rest of the countries on the Gulf... it has been very interesting finding out different things about this place. On Wednesday Stubbsy and I had our first practice. We hit at 12 and it was HOT! my feet felt like they were burning at times and we had quite a few drink breaks but we got through the 2 hour session I found out afterwards there are actually heaters under the court to regulate the humidity and stop water from forming on the surface. Who would have thought there would be heaters under court in the desert? The next day was much better. We were a little more used to the conditions and practised much better. We had the draw ceremony yesterday too, we drew Liezel and Cara in our first match. I'm sure all of us are expecting a tough and competitive match and I know Stubbsy and I are looking forward to it. Today we are going practise a couple of times and the 2nd session we are going to play a practice set against the Spanish pair Maria Jose and Nuria. We have a clinic with some people from Sony Ericsson and apart from that taking it easy.  The pool here at the hotel is very nice, I had lunch and a swim down there yesterday. The water is a little warm for my liking considering how hot it is outside but I won't complain. Hang on, I just found another light on the balcony, make that 46 lights! We will play our match tomorrow either at 2pm or 7.30pm I think. Tomorrow night there is also the end of year party. Considering how the week has been so far I'm sure it will be good fun. That's all for now I hope to be able to write with some good news next time. Sam

  • Simi
Congrats Sammy, great win, 10 aces that´s awesome!!! :-)
Very sovereign 1st and 3rd set, but maybe you lost a little concentration in the 2nd. But anyways, I´m confident for the next match. Have a good day off tomorrow.
  • Simi
Good luck for your match today in Bali against Szavay! Believe in yourself!
  • Simi
I was so sorry to hear that you and Rennae won´t play together the next season. You´ve always been so great to watch... But it´s good the two of you remain friends though! And of course concentrating on your singles is way more important now that you´re so close to the top 10.
But there´s still hoping here that the match against Bluber in Doha wasn´t Stubsur´s last match togehter on a big occasion ;-)

You have the late match today in Bali and there will be a strong Aussie contingent there to cheer you on ..

heard rumours (funny ones) of who the pairings are for next year, please make them be true.
Sams got a pretty nice group for bali. dropshot and szavay. I cant believe there is still bali left after yr ending champs, makes little sense to prolong the season further, but anyways..
    gd luck samson :D
  • Drine
The draw is out in Bali and Sam will be playing against Szavay and Martinez-Sanchez.
    Not a bad group actually.....
    Go Sammy !!!
  • Guada
Hi Sam, you and Rennae play very well in Doha. That's the important. And don't worry, you will win in Bali. Good Luck :)
    Greetings from Argentina

I can't believe the two of you lost yesterday. The match seemed very close...I wish I could have seen it. I guess I didn't throw enough coins in the water fountain *sigh*. Black and Huber and going against the Spanish team so at least you (probably) lost against the team that will win this, eh?
  • Ben
Bad luck Sam, you & Stubbsy came oh so close to making the final. Guess just a few points here & there made the difference. Ah well, now onto to Bali :)
  • Drine
Hey Sam, I've learned that you and Stubbsy will not be playing together next year (by the way, the Q&A video on the WTA Tour website was great and fun !!!).
It's really a shame, I loved watching you both and you deserved to win a title but I understand that you really want to focus on the singles next season.
    See ya !!!
  • Someday
What a shame that you and Rennae lost this match. You don't have any title together but in spite of this fact it was a great season. Don't worry and forget about today's defeat.
I really love reading your blog.
    Good luck in Bali!
  • Simi
You and Rennae were fighting so well. I just can´t believe you lost it! Why can´t you two ever be fortunate... I really hope you´ll be playing together the next season so you can finally get what you deserve so much!
    Cheer up!!!
  • Drine
Nooooooo !!!!! I can't believe you girls lost that one, I was so confident after the first set and after the second when you came back.....
This is so frustrating, you had your chances today, I'm so sad and disappointed for you:(
I'd found a livestream but it disappeared in the middle of the tie-break of the second set....not cool:( So I don't know how you played at the end....
Anyway, Sam, all I can say now is forget about that match and good luck for next week in Bali (you seem in pretty good shape, you played very well today in the doubles) !!!
    You can do it !!!
  • Cristina
I imagine you counting the lights ! Crazy you ! haha
Wish you good luck for this afternoon !
  • Sarah
Thanx for your postcard from Doha! :)
Enjoy your matches together with Stubbsy!
  • Sunsets
Haha 46 lights?! That's pretty insane. So how bright is it if you use all of them at once? Anyway, good luck against Cara and Liezel! I'll be throwing all my money in a water fountain soon and wish that you and Rennae will win, alright? :p
  • Ben
Good luck Sam in your opening doubles match with Stubbsy :) Kick some butt out there! Your blogs are enjoyable and entertaining to read.
  • Jaime
You're awesome Sam, did you know it? haha! Good luck for tommorrow! :)
  • Simi
Hi Sam, thanks for keeping us up to date. It´s nice that you´re spending a nice time in Doha!
Good luck for your match against Black/Huber. I will keep my fingers crossed!!! You can do it!
  • kim
Good luck Sam. What a great finish to the year!
  • Drine
Haha....I like the lights counting in the room !!! Indeed that's crazy !!!
I've been watching the singles matches since last Tuesday and the girls are just dying on the court, sweating a lot (thank you "heat rule" for the 10mn break !!!)
The commentators said there was 70% humidity !!! Pfew....
Well, good luck for your match tomorrow Sam and good luck with the heat as well (match at 2pm....it's gonna be horrible!!!) !!!
