Australian fourth seed Samantha Stosur took a 6-4 6-1 loss to revitalised Maria Sharapova on Monday to exit in the fourth round of the ATP and WTA Miami Masters. Stosur, who lost the French Open final last year to Francesca Schiavone, suffered with five double-faults and no aces in a contest lasting 81 minutes. Russian Sharapova refused to give out an early birthday present as Stosur, who turns 27 on Wednesday, was broken five times. Stosur’s loss left her short of her performances at the last two editions at Crandon Park, where she reached the quarterfinals. Two-time Miami finalist Sharapova saved three of the four break points she faced as clouds gathered over the stadium prior to possible forecast rain. She produced her best result so far this year at Indian Wells this month as she played her first semifinal since last August. Sharapova, who owns three Grand Slam titles, improved to 20-20 against top five players and broke a loss streak against the elite after going down in her last six matches against top players.Next up, Sharapova

Sam Stosur will be looking for her first win against former world No.1 Maria Sharapova when the meet in the fourth round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. The fourth seed in Miami, Stosur jumped out of the blocks early in her third-round match against Lucie Safarova before a late challenge from the Czech added some tension to the second set. The Australian took the opening set 6-0 and racked up a 5-2 lead in the second before Safarova reeled off three-straight games to force the second set to a tiebreak. A composed Stosur lit up the tiebreak to take it 7-1 and set up an intriguing fourth-round match. Stosur is yet to beat Sharapova in six meetings. The 16th-seeded Sharapova won 10-straight games in her 6-2 6-0 win over German wildcard Sabine Lisicki. When asked about her record against Stosur, Sharapova was quick to point out that their head-to-head record is irrelevant. “It's always a new match. That's why they put the nets up for us to play. That's why we go out there and have to play again.” Sharapova knows Stosur has improved her game since they last played a year and half ago in Tokyo. “I have to put the previous encounters behind, take a few things that worked well for me and try to use them again, but also know that we did play a while ago.” If Stosur can chalk up her first win over Sharapova she will secure her third-straight quarterfinal appearance in Miami.Sam off to a flyer

French Open finalist Samantha Stosur defeated China's Zheng Jie 6-2 6-1 on Thursday to reach the third round of the $9 million WTA and ATP Miami Masters Series hardcourt tournament. The fourth seed, ranked fifth in the world, has played the Miami quarterfinals for the past two editions, losing to the eventual champion on both occasions, Victoria Azarenka in 2009 and Kim Clijsters last year. Stosur has been getting off to fast starts, having won her opening match at her previous seven events. The Australian took just 58 minutes to advance as she never faced a break point but broke her Chinese opponent's serve on six of a dozen chances. Stosur next plays Lucie Safarova, who beat Swiss veteran Patty Schnyder 6-2 6-4. Stosur has lost all three of her matches against the 31st-ranked Czech. Sam falls to Safina
15 March 2011
Former world No.1 Dinara Safina has upset Australian Sam Stosur 7-6(2) 6-4 in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells today. The win was arguably the Russian’s best since her comeback from a debilitating back injury that kept her off the Tour for several months in 2010. Victory over the No.4 seed Stosur earnt Safina a quarterfinal match-up with compatriot Maria Sharapova, who ousted Aravane Rezai on Tuesday.Stosur sets up meeting with Safina
13 March 2011
Fourth seed Sam Stosur has kicked off her Indian Wells singles’ campaign with a comprehensive 6-2 6-2 win over Spanish qualifier Laura Pous-Tio. Stosur gave her less-experienced opponent few opportunities throughout the match, offering up just two break-point chances, of which the Spaniard managed to convert one. The Australian was able to penetrate Pous-Tio’s serve more regularly. On 11 occasions Stosur had an opportunity to break serve, which she managed to do five times to effect a relatively straightforward win in just over 66 minutes. The win sets up a third-round match with former No.1 Dinara Safina. Currently ranked 108, the one-time Russian powerhouse is working to restore her ranking and standing as one of the most formidable players on the WTA Tour. The Russian’s straight-sets win over dual Indian Wells champ and 26th seed Daniela Hantuchova marks just the second time in 2011 that Safina has passed the first round of a tournament. Stosur and Safina have met on four occasions with the Russian holding a decisive 3-1 lead in the head-to-head count. Stosur, however, won their last meeting in 2009 when Safina was the No.2 player in the world. The Queenslander’s next outing will be on Sunday when Stosur and doubles partner Francesca Schiavone take on sixth seeds Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko. Stosur and Schiavone are the third match on Court 8, with matches beginning at 11 am Indian Wells’ time. Follow the live scoresNew old ground
11 March 2011
It was this time last year that then world No.11 Sam Stosur began an incredible run of success that would culminate in her reaching her maiden Grand Slam final at Roland Garros. Starting at Indian Wells, where she lost in the semifinals to Jelena Jankovic, Stosur reeled off a string of results that racked up more Ws next to her name than anyone else on the WTA Tour during the first six months of 2010. A tournament win in Charleston, finals at Roland Garros and Stuttgart, two semis and two quarters from seven consecutive tournaments propelled Stosur inside the top 10 for the first time in her career. Twelve months on and she’s still there. Not only that, she’s moved into the top five, not a bad effort according to her coach for the past four years, Dave Taylor. “It will be interesting to see how she goes this year being a top player. Indian Wells is where she cracked the top 10. It’s very rare that a player gets in the top 10 and then a year later after doing that they’re actually in the top five, so it really shows that she has the tennis that belongs at that level,” Taylor tells samstosur.com from Indian Wells where he is overseeing his charge’s preparations. A first-round bye means a little extra time to get ready for Stosur before taking on Spanish qualifier Laura Pous-Tio in the second round. Stosur’s preparation has consisted of a week of training at her US base in Tampa, Florida, which wasn’t limited to tennis – Taylor making sure the routine didn’t get stale by introducing some different activities including kayaking. Following an Australian summer that saw the local favourite leave without adding any silverware to her Osaka and Charleston titles, Stosur suffered two tough Fed Cup losses before a three-set tussle ended unfavourably for the Australian in the Dubai quarterfinals. Despite taking a 4-1 lead in the deciding set, Stosur was unable to put away Jankovic. It’s the fourth three setter she’s lost this year (she’s yet to win one) compared with 2010 when Stosur won 15 of 21 in three-set matches. Despite the stats, Taylor isn’t overly concerned. “I think it won’t take much for her to turn that around and win a few close matches.” “The great thing is they’re good quality players and they’re very close matches. The not so great thing is that she didn’t win those but I think it just takes a bit more conviction under pressure to do the right thing and a bit of attention to detail and not to panic. “The fact is it’s only a point here or there. If they’re comprehensive losses then you have to look at maybe the way you’ve been playing and maybe go over it with more of a fine-tooth comb.” Likewise, Stosur is happy with her form and believes that the close finishes need to be put in perspective. "I actually think I am playing just as well as this time last year, if not hopefully a little bit better," she said in the lead-up to Indian Wells. "I just haven't had the results so far this year. I have lost a few tight matches and all that but I guess that means that hopefully it's just around the corner. "You fix a few points here and there throughout matches, you get through those and then all of a sudden you have had a really good year compared to a mediocre one." And Stosur’s hoping that 2011 will be the year that she becomes a Grand Slam champion. Come May the 26-year-old Australian will be one of the favourites at Roland Garros. "My game definitely suits it," she said. "The last couple of years I've played well on that surface. I've got a couple of good lead-up tournaments before the French Open and I would really like to do well there again. "I would like to try and get myself in that same position again and try and go one better. There is a long way to go at the start of a Grand Slam before you are winning the tournament but that is definitely a big goal of mine for this year."Site Information
