Former world No.1 Dinara Safina has upset Australian Sam Stosur 7-6(2) 6-4 in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells today.

The win was arguably the Russian’s best since her comeback from a debilitating back injury that kept her off the Tour for several months in 2010.

Victory over the No.4 seed Stosur earnt Safina a quarterfinal match-up with compatriot Maria Sharapova, who ousted Aravane Rezai on Tuesday.

Hi Sam , a tough day again…. , I know you weren’t in good shape this time , you gave her so many cheap points that made your game become crucial , but the game plan was still ideal and your first serve was very impressive , I saw the ball went down the corner of serve zone , then bounced lowly and fast out of your opponent’s control , although I don’t really understand how you missed those attacking shots , but don’t forget you’re the Aussie No.1and world No.4 , I believe you could find the feeling back quickly , there are many big events awaiting you to conquer them . Come on Sammy ! Keep chasing your dreams !!

Ouch that hurts!!! :( Awful loss, definitely a very bad day at the office. I’m glad for Dinara cos she needs some wins and she seems to be coming back strong theses days but Sam, come on, that was a very disappointing performance!! At least from what I could read in the news and in the forums cos I didn’t see the match. Seems like Dinara played well (despite her 16 DF’s) But too many UE’s on your side Sammy :/ Bah….let’s forget about that one now and focus on Miami :)) Good luck there ;)

Hi Sam! Yes, it´s another tough game you lost this year. And yes you don´t have the results by now. And I read something like ” Stosur will never win a Grand Slam. She is simply not good enough”.bla bla bla… You know what? Let them talk —- and you : Play your game. Just do it! Keep rockin´Sam!! Looking forward to see you play again :)

Good luck against Zheng today Sam. You’ve had tight matches against her in the past but you’re a better player now and she’s slipped a bit, so you should get past het without too much trouble. The main thing is to play the kind of tennis you’ll need to play against more serious opponents later in the draw. So stay positive, go for your shots and try to finish points as quickly as you can. Just go for it Sam!
