Sam surprised at Wimbledon

Sam surprised at Wimbledon

22 June 2011

Samantha Stosur's Wimbledon singles campaign has come to an early end at the hands of world No.262 Melinda Czink. Hungarian Czink made a mockery of her lowly ranking with an impressive 6-3 6-4 victory in an hour and seven minutes. The former world No.37 made a bright start and despite 10th seed Stosur rallying from 4-0 down in the second set, the outsider was able to complete the job.

Stosur ready for Wimbledon

Stosur ready for Wimbledon

20 June 2011

Sam Stosur is set to meet unheralded Hungarian Melinda Czink in the opening round of Wimbledon, which begins today. While Stosur's best results have come on clay and hard courts, the Australian made it to the semis at Eastbourne for the third time last week. Seeded 10th, the Queenslander has little to defend following her first-round exit last year. And she is far from worried about a possible fourth-round match-up with her nemesis Maria Sharapova. "I don't want to look ahead in any tournament, let alone Wimbledon," Stosur said. "I have made the third round one time [in eight trips]. "I think for me it is important to just get through as many matches as possible."

Stosur beaten by Bartoli

Stosur beaten by Bartoli

19 June 2011

Sam Stosur's impressive run at the AEGON International at  Eastbourne has come to an end, falling to Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli 6-3 6-1 in Saturday's semifinal. After the match was postponed due to a washout on Friday, Bartoli quickly settled in the first set and comfortably handled the blustery conditions. The Frenchwoman scored an early break and raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set before Stosur held serve to get on the board. The Australian, who came from behind to beat Vera Zvonareva in an enthralling three-set quarterfinal, tried valiantly to work her way into the match but Bartoli responded to every challenge and closed it out in 70 minutes. Stosur will now travel to Wimbledon to prepare for her first round match against Hungarian Melinda Czink on Tuesday. "It's been a really good week for me in spite of this match," Stosur said. "I'm going into Wimbledon feeling quite good. "I think I played some really good tennis here and got through some really good matches. "It's been pretty much been exactly what I would want going into Wimbledon. "I thought the other day when I played Vera it was the worst I'd ever played in, but I think today was even worse than that. "It definitely wasn't easy at all. It's one of those days where you've just got to try hard and do whatever you can to get through because it's very hard to try and hit the shots that you want." Stosur has never progressed beyond the third round at the famed south-west London tournament from eight visits.

Sam into Eastbourne semis

Sam into Eastbourne semis

17 June 2011

Samantha Stosur received a pre-Wimbledon confidence boost by coming from behind to defeat last year's finalist Vera Zvonareva at a key lead-up event. The Australian was a set and 4-2 down in the second set tiebreak before rallying to win 4-6 7-6(4) 6-4 in cool, windy conditions in Eastbourne on Thursday. Stosur battled in the gusty conditions on the English south coast early on before fighting her way to victory in two hours and 48 minutes against the world No.3. The third Grand Slam event of the year starts on Monday. Stosur's result sets up her third semifinal appearance at Devonshire Park, she will meet another former Wimbledon finalist in Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli on Friday. It was Stosur's seventh straight win over Zvonareva, the Russian coming off a three-hour-plus epic against Serena Williams only 24 hours before hand. "It was very tough conditions. Very, very windy but considering that I think we both played pretty well," said Stosur. "It is always nice to win matches in a lead-up tournament before a Grand Slam, these three matches have been good. So win or lose tomorrow, I will be feeling very good going into Wimby." Stosur struggled throughout the match with her ball toss on serve but managed to find a way to carve out the win in the challenging conditions.

Stosur to meet Zvonareva in quarters

Stosur to meet Zvonareva in quarters

16 June 2011

Samantha Stosur continued to finetune her game for Wimbledon next week by romping to a 6-3 6-2 win over Serbian teenager Bojana Jovanovski in the lead-up tournament in Eastbourne. The Australian completed the comfortable victory over the world No.53 in just over an hour on the back of an impressive serving display at Devonshire Park. She will next play Vera Zvonareva following her epic 3-6 7-6(5) 7-5 win over reigning Wimbledon champion Williams in three hours and 12 minutes. Stosur has won her past six matches against the Russian but they have not played against each other on grass since 2004. World No.10 Stosur backed up her straight-sets win over Nadia Petrova in the opening round by firing down 11 aces in the overcast conditions on court 3 to advance to the quarterfinals. Grass is considered the Queenslander's weakest surface but she has made the semifinals in Eastbourne twice in the past and has looked in good touch this week. Stosur, 27, has only reached the third round once at Wimbledon in eight visits but has tried to use the additional time created by last month's French Open third round exit to tighten up her game on grass. In other news, Stosur has been seeded 10th at Wimbledon, which starts on 20 June.

Stosur edges Petrova in Eastbourne

Stosur edges Petrova in Eastbourne

14 June 2011

Updated 4:00 pm. Samantha Stosur has made a promising start to her Wimbledon preparations by rolling Nadia Petrova 6-1 6-4 in the key lead-up event in Eastbourne. The Russian had notched up comfortable victories in their previous four meetings before the Australian turned the tables with a 52-minute victory in tricky, windy conditions. Stosur had won no more than six games in a match against world No.37 Petrova before producing the comprehensive win over the two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist on grass. The Australian has only reached the third round at Wimbledon once in eight trips. She has made the semifinals twice in the past at the Devonshire Park event and was keen to make another strong run this week. "When I got 4-0 up in the first set I thought at least you have got more games in one set than you ever have before," Stosur said. "I have struggled against her in the past so to win and to win relatively comfortably was good." Last year's Roland Garros finalist said her limp third round exit in Paris had acted as a major wake-up call for her. She has used the extra week to fine-tune her skills on grass, which has proven her weakest surface, having only reached the third round once in eight trips to Wimbledon. The fortnight turnaround between the end of the French Open and start of Wimbledon makes the transition from clay to grass the toughest on the tour for players. "It was not the way I wanted, but I figured after a couple of days of that disappointment, I thought you can make that into a positive by practising on grass longer," she said. Stosur said her shock three-set loss to Gisela Dulko at Roland Garros had reminded her of the importance of being on top of her game for every round of a Grand Slam. "It was a big wake-up call," she said. "I was struggling a little bit [earlier in the year] and then got over to Europe and started playing well again and really got my confidence back and really mentally I was able to turn things around. "In that match, I felt I went backwards a few steps." "That match showed that you have always got to be diligent." Stosur believed she had come to terms with her loss in Paris. "I did not really watch much of the tennis once I had lost," she said with a smile. "I think everyone pretty much turns the TV off after they lose." Stosur has had previous success on grass, reaching the semifinals twice in Eastbourne. "I think if you are a good player, you should be able to be good on any surface," she said. "Even though I have not done so well at Wimbledon, I know the way I need to play. It is just a matter of playing it better." One player backing Stosur to bounce back was Italy's Francesca Schiavone, her conqueror in last year's French Open final. "For Sam, it was bad [to lose so early at Roland Garros] but I think she has great qualities in any case to have good results in Wimbledon or US Open," Schiavone told AAP. "So don't worry Australia. She is coming again." Stosur will next meet the winner of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and a qualifier for a possible third-round showdown with the returning Serena Williams.
