Stosur ready in Stanford

24 July 2011

Sam Stosur is already through to the second round of the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford courtesy of an opening-round bye. The fourth seed in Stanford, this will be Stosur’s first tournament since Wimbledon, with the Australian enjoying some time off before the American hardcourt swing. Stosur’s first opponent will be either rising Romanian Simona Halep or Stosur’s Wimbledon doubles partner – Sabine Lisicki. Should Stosur make it through to the quarterfinals, a match-up with second seed Maria Sharapova or unseeded former No.1 Serena Williams looms. The other seeds in Stanford are Victoria Azarenka (No.1), Marion Bartoli (No.3), Agnieszka Radwanska (No.5), Julia Goerges (No.6), Ana Ivanovic (No.7) and Dominika Cibulkova (No.8).

Stosur and Lisicki fall short in final

Stosur and Lisicki fall short in final

3 July 2011

Sam Stosur and Sabine Lisicki’s gallant run in the Wimbledon doubles has come to an end at the final hurdle. Second seeds Katarina Srebotnik and Kveta Peschke proved to be too strong for Stosur and Lisicki who were playing just their second tournament together. The 6-3 6-1 win in the final handed Srebotnik and Peschke their first Grand Slam title. But the day didn’t begin in the most conventional manner. In the morning Stosur and Lisicki had to finish their match against Marina Erakovic and Tamarine Tanasugarn, which had been suspended the previous evening due to bad light with the third set deadlocked at 5-5. Luckily for the Australian–German duo, they wrapped the final set up fairly quickly, closing it out 6-3 4-6 8-6. After racing out to an early 3-1 lead, errors began to creep into Stour and Lisicki’s game as the second seeds, who have won three titles this year, lifted to win the next five games and the set, 6-3. The second set belonged to the Slovenian and Czech duo, who dropped just one game for the set on Peschke’s serve, but they quickly regrouped to finish the job.
