The women's part of the Australian open came to a close last night with a tough three-set battle. It was over two hours long and had some great points. Serena was a deserving winner but Justine has put in an incredible effort reaching two finals in her first two events back.   I’m heading to Adelaide on Monday, which is a little earlier than some of my teammates. The reason is that I’m the ambassador for the National Court Rebate Program and I’m officially opening the new courts in Port Lincoln, which is on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Port Lincoln is famous for its tuna industry and they have asked me to swim with the tuna. Sounds a little scary to me but I’m always up for a challenge! I’ll return to Adelaide by Tuesday afternoon and will have to get straight back into practice mode for the upcoming tie against Spain. We play the matches on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. It is going to be tough as they have three players all inside the top 30 and one of the top doubles combinations on tour as well. I always enjoy our weeks at Fed Cup throughout the year and I'm sure this will be no exception. Bye for now, Sam

My break is over and Dave and I had our first hit after a couple of days off. It was good to not pick up a racquet and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Aussie Open. This would have to be my favourite Grand Slam – there is nothing like playing at home and I love that Australia Day is always during the Aussie Open. I finally had a look at the Flinders Street train station where ANZ has put my face everywhere. It was very weird walking through and seeing myself on every banner and poster. Well the Williams sisters have taken out the first Grand Slam doubles title for the year. I spoke to Nadia Petrova (my doubles partner) and we are looking forward to better success at our next tournament in Dubai. I’m now back on the Gold Coast enjoying some family time and preparing for the Fed Cup, which is in Adelaide. I’m training with young Aussie Shannon Golds as Dave has returned to his home in Sydney. I’m looking forward to watching the men’s semifinal tonight, I’m predicting Federer to make another Grand Slam final. What a final it could be against Murray. Bye for now, Sam

Hi Everyone, Well since being out of the tournament there hasn’t been much slowing down and time for relaxing just yet. Yesterday I did a couple of sponsor visits for ANZ around the grounds, caught up with a couple of friends and after being at the courts for most of the day went for another Japanese dinner in Albert Park before retiring for the night. Sometimes days like that are more tiring then actually playing but it’s nice to meet new people and catch up with old friends. The amount of players left in the draw are very few now, you would have to say one surprise in the women’s singles draw is Jie Zheng. She now plays Henin in the bottom half of the draw for a place in the final. Even though a lot of players that lost have now left the tournament and most likely Melbourne a few new faces have started to wander through the corridors of Melbourne Park. The junior events started on Monday and also the Wheelchair men’s and women’s tournaments have begun. Anyone buying a ground pass in the next few days should definitely go out and support those players as you’ll see some pretty amazing tennis. Talk soon, Sam

My Australian Open campaign finished yesterday when I walked off RLA for the last time this summer. I lost to Serena 6-4 6-2. You probably only saw the start of the match as we played very late due to a five-set marathon before us. It is tough to stay physically and mentally prepared for so long when you are scheduled as the third match on. Dave and I had our warm up hit at 12:30 pm, then showered, had lunch, saw the physio and then sat in the gym and waited. Oh the glamour of Grand Slam tennis. I started the match strongly and the first set came down to one break of my serve. Serena was playing very well and everything I threw at her, she had an answer. Dave and I had a very well thought out match plan after studying DVDs of past matches and Serena’s loss to Dementieva last week in Sydney. She was playing with a lot of power, which made it very difficult to execute my match plan. The crowd were doing all they could to get me through and I would like to thank everyone for their support this summer. Bye for now, Sam

Serena puts an end to Sam’s run

Serena puts an end to Sam’s run

Samantha Stosur was ousted by world No.1 Serena Williams in the fourth-round of the Australian Open on Monday night. Williams ended Stosur's Open campaign 6-4 6-2 to move into the quarterfinals at Melbourne Park for the seventh time in 11 visits. "I felt good out there but, when someone's playing that aggressively and not giving you anything at all, it's pretty hard to beat," Stosur said. "Everything that I had set out and wanted to try and play like today, I thought I did that pretty well, but she played better. "Maybe if I was able to play against any other player, then maybe I would have won. "She definitely can go all the way. If she plays like that, I can't see too many players being able to stop her." The four-time Open champ next meets either Belarussian seventh seed Victoria Azarenka or Russian ninth seed Vera Zvonareva on Wednesday for a place in the last four of the season's first Grand Slam event. Stosur, 25, had conquered Williams in their most recent meeting, in the quarterfinals in Stanford last July, but was unable to repeat the dose this time around. Williams said she knew she'd have to raise her game to get past Stosur. "She is really one of the best servers in the game so it was always going to be about serving and I haven't served that well except against [my sister] Venus," Williams said. The American struck a lunging forehand winner to grab the decisive first-set break in the fifth game and then nailed a backhand down the line to pocket the opening set in 32 minutes. The 11-time major champion then broke Stosur in the very first game of the second set with another backhand winner down the line. Stosur's only look-in of the match came in the second game of the second set, but Williams ruthlessly fended off the first three and only break points she's faced all tournament with three booming serves. The top seed eventually held for a 2-0 lead with a big ace down the middle, and then seized a double break for a 5-2 advantage. In a minor consolation for Stosur, the French Open semifinalist is all but guaranteed another career-high ranking despite her disappointing defeat. Barring a series of unlikely upsets elsewhere in the draw, Stosur will climb to the cusp of the world's top 10 following her run to the last 16 for the second time in Melbourne. Alicia Molik, who peaked at No.8 shortly after reaching the Open quarterfinals in 2005, is the only Australian woman in a quarter of a century to have cracked the world's top 10. Jelena Dokic was playing under the Serbian banner when she occupied the top 10 in 2001. "I want to get to the top 10," Stosur said. "That is the first ranking goal that I've got in mind. Then, once I'm there, I'll reassess. "But the rankings are going to be what they are. I'd love to get as high as whatever that is but I've still got to go out there and win matches to do that.

Hi everyone, Yesterday was a great day. It’s a great feeling to be in the fourth round here for the second time and the third time in any Grand Slam. The match was pretty tight at the start and after going down a break early in the first set I realised I needed to be a little more aggressive and take my opportunities when they presented themselves. Once I won the first set I really started to feel comfortable and was able to finish the match with some very good serving and play. After the match I was able to catch up briefly with an old friend Nick Riewoldt. I'm sure all of you who follow the AFL know who I'm talking about. We went to the serving speed gun in the garden at Melbourne Park and tried to beat each other’s speed. I'm not sure who actually got the fastest but seeing as I'm writing this I'm going to say it was me ;) We went to Robina primary school together many years ago, so it’s great to still keep in touch with someone who you met in grade 3 or 4. Tomorrow I'm practising with a young junior player named Blake. We practiced in Sydney together and he was good, so Dave (my coach) organised for him to come and hit again. I'm sure they will both give me a great workout going into my match against Serena. Until next time, keep enjoying the tennis, Sam

This morning I thought I would give you a pre-match rundown of how I prepare and, guess what? I didn’t get time.  I had my alarm set for 6:45 am with the intention of getting up at 7am, it was a little after 7 when I got up.  Porridge was delivered to my room as it was Saturday but normally I would go out for brekky, the car was booked for 8am to Melbourne Park. I had Rod Laver Arena booked for 9am for my pre-match warm-up, which lasted for 30 mins. I then shower and have another quick bite to eat before seeing the physio and getting my wrist strapped. I usually have 2 racquets strung up for the match but today I had three as I was unsure of the temperature in RLA and whether the roof would be open or closed. The tension in my string depends on the temperature. I do about a 20 minute warm-up and stretch in the gym before Dave and I head out into the car park for a few reaction and quick feet drills. We talk over tactics and match preparations before Dave departs for the stands and I go to the assembly area for the match. This is the time where I personally prepare for the match and to settle my nerves before heading out in front of 15,000 spectators. This is where the cameras start rolling ... Talk soon, Sam

Sam looks towards Serena

Sam looks towards Serena

23 January 2010

Samantha Stosur is gunning for world No.1 and defending champion Serena Williams after storming into the fourth round of the Australian Open with a straight-sets win over Italian Alberta Brianti. Australia's world No.13 outclassed Brianti 6-4 6-1 in just 72 minutes at Rod Laver Arena on Saturday to reach the last 16 at the Open for the second time. Williams can confirm a Monday appointment with Stosur later on Saturday with victory over Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro. After squandering a series of match points against Williams in Sydney last year, Stosur turned the tables on the American superstar with a breakthrough triumph over the 11-time Grand Slam champion in Stanford in July. "We've had a couple of close matches the last two times we've played and, yeah, I got the last one so I'm going to ride with that and go into the match feeling pretty confident," Stosur said. "I know I'm going to have to play extremely well to try and beat her and I'm going to give it my best shot and hopefully I can do well." After a scratchy start, Stosur produced a hugely impressive serving display to completely dominate the 73rd-ranked Brianti. The 25 year old thundered down 11 aces in just nine service games and landed 77 per cent of her powerful first deliveries. "It's recently been a bigger goal of mine to try and get a better percentage on my first serve and today I did that well and was still going for it and hit a few aces as well," Stosur said. "So it makes it easier as well to play out here, that's for sure, when you're getting a lot of first serves in." A proven frontrunner, French Open semifinalist Stosur has never lost a Grand Slam match after winning the first set. But she has found herself in a few dogfights in recent times and was determined not to slacken off after recovering from a service break down to snatch the first set on Saturday. "My coach constantly tells me I have to keep my foot down when I'm winning, so I tried to do that today and pulled it off," Stosur said. "It's something I've been trying to work on. So very pleased."
