Hi from the Gold Coast
31 January 2009
I have been home on the coast for a couple of days now...It was a good summer here in Australia. I loved playing with the home town support once again. I appreciate all your cheering and well wishes. Each tournament at home is special in it's own way. Brisbane was great because it was a new event and it's almost in my backyard. The venue is awesome and I think the players really enjoyed being there. Sydney is special for me because I love the city and it is where I made a final there back in 2005 against Alicia. I would love to have come through THAT match against Serena in the first round, but it wasn't to be and I have learned a lot from it. Melbourne is great because it's our grand slam. The city comes alive and there's so much to do and see. Melbourne Park is still a top world class venue and getting the chance to play all my singles matches on Rod Laver Arena is just brilliant. It's also nice to have so much support on court from family, friends and fans in general. As you may be aware I have some new sponsors on board. I am now using Babolat racquets and wearing Lacoste clothes. I love the racquets, and have made the transition easily and I am really enjoying playing with them. The clothes are really nice and comfortable and the feedback I have received is that they are a good look too!. I am very much looking forward to getting more cool gear in Paris later in the year! I have spent the last few days resting up but it's back to work today. I'm flying to Perth for next week's Fed Cup. Casey, Jelena, Rennae and I are very eager to do well there and get back into the world group as soon as we can. It will be nice to be part of the team again. We are all playing well and hopefully things will go our way! After Perth I will return home for a few days and then my next stop on the WTA Tour will be Dubai. After that I will go back to my other home the United States and compete in Indian Wells and Miami. I will keep you informed where I am off to after that, but it will be somewhere in Europe no doubt and on the dirt! I am actually very eager to play on the clay this year. My results have been getting better each year I play on it. I am feeling pretty comfortable with my approach to playing on it now, and think I have a better understanding of what is required to win on it. Well thats about it for now. Thanks again for all your support over the summer here. I have learned a lot about my game and what I need to do win from now onwards. I feel like I am playing well and I'm confident of getting some good results this year. Til next time, that's it for me. SamBrisbane International begins
3 January 2009
The draw is complete and Sam will kick off proceedings Sunday in the opening match of the tournament.
Sam will take on Russian Maria Kirilenko in the first round of singles. The gates open at 9am local time, and matches get underway at 10am.
Sam last played Maria in the final of the Korean Open late in 2008. She will be determined to avenge her tough three set loss there with a win tomorrow in front of her home state crowd.
In other exciting news for Sam, she has started 2009 with two new sponsors. From the start of the Brisbane event she will be using Babolat racquets, specifically the Pure Storm model and wearing Lacoste clothing.
