Sam delayed by New York rain
7 September 2011
Samantha Stosur is set to have her patience tested at the US Open this week after rain washed out Tuesday's play in New York. With more wet weather forecast for the next two days and officials still to squeeze in men's fourth-round matches, Stosur is no certainty to get on court on Wednesday (Thursday morning AEST). Stosur will become Australia's first woman to reach the US Open semifinals in 27 years if she beats last year's finalist Vera Zvonareva in their quarterfinal. The nation's last female player to reach the final four at Flushing Meadows was Wendy Turnbull in 1984. The weather forced Stosur to train indoors on Tuesday at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center ahead of her meeting with the Russian world No.2. The winner of her clash with Zvonareva will take on the victor of Germany's Angelique Kerber and 26th seed Flavia Pennetta. Any day of wet weather at the US Open tends to re-ignite debate about the lack of a roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Australian Open and Wimbledon have retractable roofs and Roland Garros officials plan to follow suit by 2016. However the prohibitive cost of covering the world's largest tennis stadium in New York is a factor. The site is built on landfill with estimates for putting on a roof upwards of USD$150 million (AUD$142 million). Play was due to resume on Wednesday (Thursday 0100 AEST), weather permitting.Sam’s New York state of mind
5 September 2011
Samantha Stosur is not holding back anymore. The normally-restrained Australian has been letting all of her emotions spill out in New York on the way to Tuesday's US Open quarterfinal against Vera Zvonareva. The pumped-up Queenslander even received the first warning of her career for an obscenity during Sunday's 6-2 6-7(15) 6-3 marathon victory over Russian Maria Kirilenko. It might not be her last code violation at Flushing Meadows as she bids to become the first Australian woman to reach the US Open semifinals in 27 years. "I'm trying as hard as I can out there and don't want to leave anything out there," Stosur said. "You don't want to get a code violation or do something wrong, but if that's what you have to do to release it and be able to play the next point well, then so be it." The 27-year-old has been heavily criticised in the past for not showing enough emotion as matches have slipped from her grasp. That has not been the case at this year's US Open. New Yorkers have really embraced Stosur and her fighting spirit. She has spent almost six hours on court in her past two matches against Nadia Petrova and Kirilenko. The Australian credited the rowdy crowds at Flushing Meadows for her new-found aggression on court. "I've probably been more pumped up in the last two matches more than I ever have been in my whole life," she said. "It's just the ride of adrenalin playing out there." Last year's French Open finalist displayed some real grit against Kirilenko by recovering to win after failing to convert five match points in the longest women's tiebreak in Grand Slam history. "I haven't always been known for my competitiveness out there, to really fight hard," Stosur said. "But for it to come out, back to back days, it's definitely very rewarding. "I know now I can do it." With such a tantalising draw, the stakes on Tuesday could hardly be higher for Stosur. The winner of her quarter-final will take on either German world No.92 Angelique Kerber or Italian 26th seed Flavia Pennetta for a spot in the final. Stosur has long been renowned for her fitness and was confident in her powers of recovery before taking on last year's Flushing Meadows finalist. The Australian has enjoyed a mental grip on the world No.2, having won their past seven meetings including a come-from-behind win in Eastbourne in June. "It's a nice record to have against someone," Stosur said. "But at the end of the day, now we're playing in a grand slam and I can't remember the last time we played in a Grand Slam. "I'm sure she wants to get one back. "Obviously, it's a big moment for both of us in the quarters." A confident Zvonareva warmed up for the quarterfinal by putting away German 22nd seed Sabine Lisicki 6-2 6-3. She felt her past performances against Stosur counted for little. "The record is one thing," she said. "New day is a new day. "There's nothing I can do about it right now. "But I can go on the court and try to change it a little bit."Sam makes US Open quarters
5 September 2011
Samantha Stosur outlasted Russian 25th seed Maria Kirilenko 6-2 6-7(15) 6-3 to progress to the US Open quarterfinals for the second straight year at Flushing Meadows. Stosur had five match points in an epic second set tiebreaker, the longest in women's singles Grand Slam history, before finally closing out the match in two hours and 37 minutes. The Australian won the contest on her eighth match point when Kirilenko dragged her backhand wide on the Grandstand court. The longest tiebreak was just the latest record for Stosur, who won the longest women's singles match in tournament history in the third round on Friday night and played in the latest finish in New York last year. The ninth-seeded Australian will play last year's finalist Vera Zvonareva who defeated in-form German 22nd seed Sabine Lisicki in straight sets. The winner of Stosur's quarterfinal will meet either German world No.92 Angelique Kerber or Italian 26th seed Flavia Pennetta for a spot in the final. The Queenslander is going to need all of her powers of recovery to be ready in time for the quarterfinal following her two marathon matches. Stosur's match was shifted off Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday afternoon with officials wary of a long contest disrupting the evening television schedule. It might have been Stosur and Nadia Petrova's third-round match on Friday night that lasted a record three hours and 17 minutes, that made them a tad cautious. And how wise their judgment proved to be. Stosur and Kirilenko started their match on Grandstand nearly three hours later than scheduled and the Australian made a flying start. She won the opening 10 points of the match with her heavy ground strokes overwhelming the slender Russian. Stosur led 5-0 after 17 minutes, exactly the same imposing numbers that Serena Williams posted on her way to her third-round win over fourth seed Victoria Azarenka on Saturday. The Australian hot streak cooled off but still won the opening set by the half hour mark, having landed 10 winners to her opponent's one. Kirilenko worked her way back into the contest with Stosur receiving a code violation for an audible obscenity after dropping her serve to trail 4-3 in the second set. The Russian's joy was short lived as Stosur broke back and the set had to be decided by a tiebreak. Finishing off the job has never been one of the Australian's strengths and Kirilenko mercilessly targeted her backhand throughout the tiebreak with plenty of success. In a nail-biting affair, both players had countless chances to close out the set with Stosur unable to convert any of her five match points. As the tension ramped up, Kirilenko correctly challenged three line calls before taking the set on her sixth opportunity as the Queenslander put a forehand into the net. In the final set, Stosur broke Kirilenko's serve in the fifth game and claimed a 4-2 lead. After having problems serving out in her past two matches, the Australian had three match points on Kirilenko's serve and sealed the third win on her third opportunity.Sam fights her way into fourth round

Update 2:50 pm. Samantha Stosur has reached the US Open fourth round following an epic 7-6(5) 6-7(5) 7-5 victory over 24th seed Nadia Petrova at Louis Armstrong Stadium. The big Russian pushed Stosur to the limit in a gripping contest before the Australian prevailed in three hours and 16 minutes in New York. Stosur won the contest on her fifth match point and the result meant the Australian progressed beyond the third round at a Grand Slam for the first time this year. She will next meet Russian 25th seed Maria Kirilenko for a spot in the quarterfinals. Stosur's side of the draw continued to open up earlier on Friday with her nemesis Maria Sharapova joining Marion Bartoli and Venus Williams in the departure lounge. After dropping her opening service game, Stosur played some scorching tennis to jump to a 5-2 lead and served for the first set at 5-3. However, she wobbled and was unable to take advantage of three set points as Petrova fought her way back for a tiebreak. Stosur again looked on top at 4-2 in the tiebreak but Petrova captured three straight points to take back the momentum. Petrova's shot to take the 5-4 advantage was tinged with controversy, the ball hitting the back of the line and being called out as Stosur went to strike it. The Russian challenged the call and was awarded the point instead of it being replayed. Stosur, not normally known for showing her emotions on the court, vented her frustration as she struck a ball firmly back over the net. After getting angry, Stosur got even by reeling off the next three points to take the set. The Australian continued to pile the pressure on her opponent's serve and captured a break in the fifth game. Serving for the match at 5-4, Stosur had her problems again with two wild shanks and a double fault. The Queenslander steadied to have two match points but Petrova responded by playing some stunning tennis to level the scores at 5-5. In the resulting tiebreak, Stosur saved two set points before Petrova forced the contest into a third set with an ace. Gaining in confidence, Petrova broke Stosur's serve in the third game of the final set and held a 4-2 lead. Stosur broke back in the eighth game to level the scores and saved a break point for a 5-4 lead. With the tension ramping up on both players, Petrova survived two more match points to even the ledger at 5-5. However, with Stosur leading 6-5, the Australian finally won the encounter on her fifth match point when Petrova netted her return. Stosur's match against Petrova was the longest women's singles contest at the tournament during the Open era. Unlike every other Grand Slam, the US Open has a tiebreak in the final set of a match.Stosur into second round

Samantha Stosur has thumped Swede Sofia Arvidsson 6-2 6-3 to advance to the second round of the US Open in New York. Last year's quarterfinalist at Flushing Meadows defeated the world No.56 Arvidsson in 62 minutes on Monday night. Ninth seed Stosur used her powerful serve and heavy ground strokes to dominate the Scandinavian on court 11. The Australian will next play the winner of American Coco Vandeweghe and Italian Alberta Brianti for a spot in the third round.Stosur set to put her stamp on New York
27 August 2011
Samantha Stosur knows tennis players are judged by their performances at Grand Slams. She knows her six wins over top 10 players this year have barely registered with the sporting public compared with her early exits at the majors. Stosur knows good lead-up performances count for little, having carried good form into the French Open and Wimbledon this year only to crash out before the opening weekend. But enough is enough for the world No.10. She wants to stop the rot in the Big Apple at next week's US Open. "I think my Grand Slam results this year have been a little bit disappointing," she said. "I would like to make this last one count for a little more than the others. "French and Wimbledon, I had good lead-up tournaments then kind of failed at the big one. "I have had two good lead-ups and it is a good time to change that chain of events." Stosur was dripping in sweat following her training session in Friday's humid conditions in New York as the city braced for Hurricane Irene's arrival on Sunday. Flushing Meadows was due to shut down on Saturday from 5 pm (0700 Sunday AEST) until the opening day of play on Monday. Low-lying areas in New York were to be evacuated by Saturday afternoon and public transport shut down in readiness for the hurricane. But making an impact in the final Grand Slam of the year was at the forefront of Stosur's mind. Despite her disappointing showings at this year's Grand Slams, she said maintaining a healthy ranking was a positive and a good result in New York would put a bright note on a flat year. "I think my year, I could have done better," she said. "You think: 'Why has it not happened this year compared to last year?' "Having said that, I am still 10 in the world. "I still try to keep on looking at things in the big picture and things are not too bad." Stosur has a reasonably friendly US Open draw up until a potential fourth-round showdown with Frenchwoman and eighth seed, Marion Bartoli. "I guess the draw is fine, but it is only fine if you win," Stosur said with a smile. The Australian will meet Swedish world No.56 Sofia Arvidsson in the opening round and aimed on asserting her authority from the opening points of the match. Stosur admitted she had allowed Gisela Dulko and Melinda Czink to grab the early momentum in her respective losses at this year's French Open and Wimbledon. "You have to be wary of that because if players get confident at the start of the match, sometimes it is hard to stop them," she said. "I have to play quite aggressive and get her moving and open up the court and exploit the fact that she does not have a huge weapon."Where Can I Buy Diazepam
