Sam loses final

29 September 2008

Seoul, AAP: Australia's Samantha Stosur is still searching for her first Sony Ericsson WTA singles title after losing the Korea Open final to Russian top seed Maria Kirilenko today. Kirilenko rallied from a set down to claim the title 2-6 6-1 6-4. Stosur, the world No.77, has now lost all four of her singles finals, including Prague in 2006 and consecutive defeats in the Gold Coast and Sydney deciders in 2005.  The Australian does boast 22 doubles titles, including grand slam success at the US and French Opens, but couldn't add a first singles trophy today. "I think I got a little bit passive with the way I was playing," Stosur said. "And she stepped it up a little bit and became more aggressive." Stosur broke Kirilenko in the third and fifth games of the first set to make a confident start to the match, before the Russian fought back to win her third WTA title of the year. Kirilenko took advantage of several unforced errors to break Stosur twice before serving out the second set. After leading 4-0 in the third, Kirilenko held out a determined Stosur to take the match in just over two hours. No.33 on the WTA rankings, 21-year-old Kirilenko adds the Korea Open title to the Estoril and Barcelona championships she won earlier this year. The Russian was relieved she was able to fight back after a poor start to the match. "I did a lot of mistakes. It was unbelievable how many mistakes I did," she said. "And she started to play very good and she served so good and for me it was difficult to return her serve." But she was able to respond and the Korean title gives Kirilenko a measure of redemption after she lost to Venus Williams in last year's final here. She also returned to form after heading to Seoul having been beaten in the first round of her previous three tournaments - at New Haven, the US Open in August and Tokyo last week. "I feel good. I feel tired," Kirilenko said.

After winning the first set 6-4, Sam was up a break and leading 4-2 in the second, but Lisicki fought back to force a tie break in which she prevailed 7-4 to clinch the set. The third set started badly for Sam, her serve broken in the first game. She  immediately regained the break however, and finished strongly with a 6-3 result.
