Stosur to face qualifier in Tokyo first round

Stosur to face qualifier in Tokyo first round

28 September 2009

Sam Stosur has drawn American qualifier Alexa Glatch in the first round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, Japan. Stosur and Glatch have never played each other, and despite there being 99 ranking spots between the two, Stosur will be on her guard as she looks to continue her excellent season. This is Stosur's first match since completing doubles duties at the US Open with fellow Aussie Rennae Stubbs who she will team up with again in Tokyo. Stosur faces a potentially difficult second-round match - if she can move past her first-round opponent either Francesca Schiavone or Maria Sharapova will be waiting for her.

Wozniak bundles Sam out of Tokyo

Wozniak bundles Sam out of Tokyo

3 October 2008

It was a disappointing day for Samantha, as she exited the Tokyo event at the hands of Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak. She was bundled out of the tournament with a 7-5 6-3 loss to the world number 38 in 1 hour and 15 minutes. In usual fashion of late, Sam got off to a brilliant start, racing out to a 5-2 lead. She had 2 set points at 40-15, but Wozniak fought hard to clinch that game and the next 5 to take out the set 7-5. From there, Sam was facing an uphill battle as she was broken early in the second set, and eventually succumbed 6-3.
